Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (AP) is set to meet his Swedish colleague Magdalena Andersson in Stockholm on Tuesday. They will discuss security and environmental issues.

Jonas Gahr Støre will meet Magdalena Andersson in Stockholm on Tuesday.

The trip to Sweden was actually supposed to be Støre’s first visit abroad as prime minister, but it was postponed on two occasions due to the corona pandemic. When he made a third attempt two days before the Russian invasion, the plane had to turn around due to snowy weather in Stockholm.

Environmental issues

Støre and Andersson will finally meet one day after UN Secretary-General António Guterres criticized countries that lie about their efforts to reverse global warming.

Among other things, the leaders of the two countries will discuss the green transition and cooperation.

According to the report that the UN Climate Panel presented on Monday, the use of fossil fuels must be reduced quickly to prevent global warming.

“I think the Nordic countries can play a joint role… I will talk to the Swedish Prime Minister and the business community about this,” Støre told NTB.

NATO membership

Of course, security, defense, and the war in Ukraine will also be on the agenda.

In recent years, Norway and Sweden, together with Finland and Denmark, have invested more in establishing Nordic defense cooperation. With a less stable Russia, Norway’s neighboring countries have also raised the issue of membership in NATO.

The Prime Minister of Finland said on Sunday that the country could decide whether to apply for membership in the defense alliance within a few weeks. Sweden is considering doing the same.

Sweden and NATO

Before the weekend, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said that she did not rule out that Sweden could become a member of NATO.

“I do not rule out a NATO membership in any way, but I want us to make a well-founded analysis of what opportunities we have in this situation, the threats and risks, to make the decision that is best for Sweden,” Andersson said in an interview with SVT on Wednesday.
