PM Støre rejects European gas price ceiling wishes

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (AP) told the newspaper VG that he has no faith that a price ceiling that includes gas from Norway would be effective, as several EU countries have proposed.

“It is not a solution that we support. We don’t think it provides an answer to the EU’s challenges,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told VG about a price cap on Norwegian gas.

On Friday, the EU’s energy ministers gathered for a crisis meeting in Brussels. The aim of the meeting was to reduce electricity prices for consumers and businesses. One of the measures the European Commission has proposed is a price cap on Russian gas. Several EU countries have also advocated that Norway, which has emerged as the largest supplier of gas to Europe, should also cut gas prices.

Norway has made a lot of money from gas after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Norwegian gas revenues were NOK 830 billion last year. This year it is estimated that revenues will be NOK 1,500 billion, and next year the estimate is NOK 1,900 billion, according to E24.

Støre emphasized that companies sell the gas, not the government.

“I tell my European colleagues – it is not me who sells the gas. Licenses are given to companies that pay a high tax, and then they are the ones who sell the gas.”
