If Finland and Sweden choose to join NATO, Norway will welcome them, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (AP) said on Wednesday.

“We would like to see Finland and Sweden become full members of the Alliance,” Støre said in an interview with the Finnish news agency STT.

He emphasized that defense cooperation between the three countries will continue regardless of what Sweden and Finland choose.

NATO membership has suddenly become a prominent item on the political agenda in both countries after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Støre says that Sweden and Finland must make the decision in a democratic way and not be exposed to pressure.

Russia has repeatedly warned the two countries against joining NATO and warned of “consequences” if they join the Alliance.
