Police officers have allegedly been at a nightclub in Hammerfest a week before the big corona outbreak in the Municipality. They are now being investigated for a possible breach of corona rules.

“What I can say is that on May 12, several police officers, over ten people, went to the nightclub Fresh in Hammerfest,” Deputy Chief of Police Tor Erik Nilsen in Finnmark Police District told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

Hammerfest has recently been hit by a major corona outbreak. A total of 222 people have so far been infected during the outbreak in the Municipality, and 2,700 people are in quarantine. That corresponds to 25% of the population of Hammerfest.

The day the police officers were at the nightclub, two people were supposed to have birthday celebrations at the club – also the employees of the police.

Investigation to reveal details

“As I understand it, the nightclub was also open to paying guests. There were also several others there who are not a part of the police,” Nilsen said.

According to the rules at the time, no more than ten people could gather at a private event outside their own homes.

Now Deputy Chief of Police Nilsen hopes that the investigation will reveal more details about what happened at the nightclub that evening.

“We think that an investigation will clarify whether this was an event, and not least whether someone will be penalized according to the COVID-19 regulations,” he said.
