The police in Gothenburg are in mourning after a policeman was shot and killed in the suburb of Biskopsgården on Hisingen on Wednesday night. Videos show how several of the policeman’s colleagues were desperately trying to save his life, newspaper Aftonbladet writes.

Despite a large-scale hunt for the perpetrator, no one was arrested Thursday morning. A woman who lives close to the crime scene informed Aftonbladet that she was woken up by voices right outside her window.

“I was terrified, and afterward, I could not sleep. All this happened right before our eyes, in our area. It just feels very strange and sad,” the woman said.

Shot while talking to people

The police are said to have been talking to some people when they were shot. They had arrived after being alerted by residents in the area who heard gunshots. The news that the policeman was dead came just before 3 o’clock. A large number of police patrols were on the scene until Thursday morning.

“It is with great sadness that we have received the message that a colleague has died after being shot in the evening. Our thoughts go to the family, close and dear ones, and co-workers,” National Police Chief Anders Thornberg said.

He also said that he has spoken with the police chief in the West Police District to ensure that there are enough resources to find the culprit.

Must reduce the risk

“The police profession is associated with risk, and we must continue the work of reducing the risks with great determination,” he continued.

Biskopsgården has been the scene of shooting episodes several times before. It was here that two men were shot at a pizza restaurant in December 2019. One died. Both were linked to a criminal environment. In March 2020, a 16-year-old was shot and killed in the suburb.

“This is a terrible, tragic event and a sad message to receive. My thoughts go above all to his relatives, but also to all his colleagues,” Regional Chief Klas Johansson of the West Police District in Sweden said.

Police spokesman Fredrik Svedemyr stated that investigators started with questioning witnesses at the scene.
