A policeman in the Western Police District has been suspended after he was charged with driving a car while intoxicated in Stord on Sunday night.

“The suspension is made on the basis of the Civil Service Act and applies with immediate effect. The employment council will consider the suspension at its first ordinary meeting in February,” the Western Police District wrote in a press release on Tuesday morning.

Just before 4 AM on Sunday, a car drove off the road at Fitjarvegen along national road 545 in Stord, the newspaper Bergens Tidende reports.

When the police arrived at the car, it was empty, and it had suffered major material damage. An hour after the incident, they located the car owner, who is a policeman. The police suspected that the man was intoxicated and took a blood sample. He is now charged with driving under the influence. The man was not on duty when the incident occurred.

The Western Police District announced that the Southwestern Police District is investigating the criminal case.

“It’s his car, but he denies criminal guilt. He has no knowledge of the traffic accident,” lawyer Ove Kahrs Wangensteen, who defends the man, told Bergens Tidende on Monday.
