The development in the Ukraine crisis is worrying, Pope Francis said on Wednesday, urging the parties to refrain from violent solutions.

“More and more disturbing scenarios are now emerging despite repeated diplomatic attempts in recent times,” the pope said in his weekly audience on Wednesday.

He did not specifically mention Russia but said that developments in Ukraine “discredit international law.”

“Once again, peace is threatened by self-interest,” the 85-year-old pope warned.

“I ask all parties involved to refrain from any action that may create more suffering for the population.”
