Pope Francis condemned the shipwreck in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya, which is said to have led to the death of around 130 migrants.

On Sunday, the pope pointed out that the people asked for help for two days but said that those who could have saved them chose to see the other way.

The migrants on the overcrowded boat asked for help on Wednesday. On Thursday, when a rescue ship and a merchant ship arrived, the boat had partially sunk.

Several dead people were found in the water. No survivors were found.

“I must admit that the tragedy of the last days in the Mediterranean hurts very much,” the pope said in front of an assembly in St. Peter’s Square.
