Pope Francis: I can’t explain why God allows children to suffer

Pope Francis says he has no explanation for why God allows children to suffer.

The pope made the statement in his first TV interview with journalist Fabio Fazio on Sunday.

“I have no explanation for that. I have my faith and try to love my Father, God. But why children suffer, I have no answer to that,” the 85-year-old answered Fazio’s question about why God lets children be in pain.

Pope Francis also said that gossip and bullying are among the biggest dangers in society and condemned the aggression that exists in some places in society.

“I think of schools, of bullying,” the pope said.

The pope also insisted that refugees and migrants must be received and integrated. He referred to situations where rescue ships have picked up migrants from the Mediterranean only to be rejected by European countries.

“All countries must say how many migrants they can receive,” he said, urging countries to show more solidarity.

“War is always destruction”

“This is an internal political problem,” he continued. The host asked him about the crisis on the border between Russia and Ukraine, to which Francis replied that “war is always destruction.”

There were also more light-hearted moments in the hour-long interview. The pope was recently seen in a record store in Rome. He said that he likes classical music very much and that he also has a soft spot for tango.

“One who does not dance the tango is not from Buenos Aires,” he said.

He was also asked if he felt lonely and if he had friends.

“Friends give me strength. I only have a few, but they are close and true friends,” the pope replied.
