California officials in charge of workplace safety voted down  a proposal requiring condom use, mouth protection and goggles for porn actors in order to increase safety in the workplace.

The state Division of Occupational Safety and Health’s Standards Board voted the measure down with three voting against the proposal and two voting for the proposal on Thursday.
The decision was made after consulting tens of actors, writers, directors and producers; who testified how the measures will hurt the industry.
– These measures are based on prejudices, and not science, and would hurt actors,  Eric Paul Leue, director of the porn industry’s trade organization, said.
He believes adequate procedures to protect against sexually transmitted diseases are already in place, but that these were ignored by the committee.
The president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Michael Winstein, has worked to make these initiatives law since 2009.
According to a survey on sexually transmitted diseases from 2012, te 28 percent of porn actors tested positive for STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia.
