From January 2022, all pregnant women in Norway over the age of 35 will be offered the NIPT blood test and early ultrasound.

“We are pleased that more women will soon be offered the NIPT test and early ultrasound. This can contribute to more security and better maternity care for women across the country,” Minister of Health and Care Services Ingvild Kjerkol (AP) stated.

The government stated that the health trusts are responsible for offering the test to pregnant women in their respective areas. An early ultrasound should be offered around week 12 of the pregnancy.

NIPT stands for non-invasive prenatal test and is a blood test that can detect chromosomal abnormalities.
