New insurance rules for electric scooters mean that several rental companies are now increasing their prices by around 20%.

From Thursday, the government mandates that electric scooters must have liability insurance – just like cars.

“This requirement is to protect both the rental companies and those who rent electric scooters, and not least third parties who can get into accidents through no fault of their own,” State Secretary Mette Gundersen (AP) in the Ministry of Transport and Communications told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

The rental companies Tier and Voi say they are increasing their prices by around 20%.

According to the insurance industry, electric scooter insurance is expensive because of many accidents with these vehicles.
