Projection: Norway will not reach its climate targets without purchasing carbon credits from abroad

Projections in the budget proposal for 2021 show that Norway is not likely to reach its climate target for 2030 with a national cut in emissions alone.

Norway has set itself the goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50-55% of 1990 levels by 2030.

But new projections in the proposed state budget for 2021, which news bureau NTB has seen, show that emissions are only likely to decrease by 20.8% with the current policy.

In absolute numbers, there is talk of a reduction from 51.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gases in 1990 to 40.8 million tonnes in 2030.

Norway will thus be dependent on the purchase of carbon credits from abroad to make up for it.
