On Tuesday afternoon, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Minsk agreement from 2015 no longer exists.

According to Putin, the agreement was, in fact, dead long before Russia chose to recognize the two breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.

The Minsk agreement was negotiated between Russia, Ukraine, and the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in 2014. It entailed an immediate ceasefire and autonomy for eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian National Assembly adopted the agreement in the summer of 2015, but autonomy was never introduced.
