A woman in her 50s has been sentenced to prison by the Borgarting Court of Appeal for animal cruelty.

“In the Court of Appeal’s view, this case is a serious violation of the Animal Welfare Act. It concerns a very large number of animals, a total of 48 dogs, ten cats, five rabbits, all of which have suffered long-term suffering, neglect, and stress of various kinds,” the verdict from the Court of Appeal states, according to the newspaper Moss Avis.

In 2018, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority received an anonymous report of concern about the conditions on a farm in Råde. In total, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority found 48 dogs, ten cats, and five rabbits during an inspection of the farm.

The 48 dogs were caged most of the day. The cages were soiled with feces and urine, and many of the dogs were in poor condition.

The rooms and cages where the cats and rabbits were kept were also soiled with urine and feces.

In September last year, the woman was sentenced to one year and two months in prison. She was also banned from caring for animals for ten years. The Court of Appeal reduced the prison sentence by one month but at the same time concluded that the ban should not be limited in time.
