The Red Cross and Blue Cross have received a record number of inquiries from families with children who cannot afford a holiday. The pandemic has exacerbated the situation.

The Blue Cross had to reject around three out of four of all applicants for free holidays.

“We see that the vast majority of those who apply to us state that the application is due to poverty issues. And it increases with each passing year. It was bad before, and during the pandemic, it has gotten even worse,” Stine Hermansen Bomann in Blue Cross told TV 2.

The Red Cross can accommodate 3,400 participants via its holiday offers but still must reject many applicants, Camilla Ringdal Dukefos, program manager for children and young people in the Red Cross, noted.
