More than 60% of people with an immigrant background have experienced discrimination in meetings with the City of Oslo in the past year, according to a report commissioned by the Municipality.

“These are serious numbers. We want to be a Municipality for everyone, both as a service provider and employer,” Rina Mariann Hansen (AP), City Councilor for Work, Integration, and Social Services, told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

Oslo Municipality has commissioned the report from the Institute for Church, Religion, and Worldview Research (KIFO – Institutt for kirke-, religions- og livssynsforskning).

The Municipality will use the report to see what they can improve on, Hansen said.

The report points out that racism and discrimination are perceived as a persistent and critical challenge in minorities’ meetings with Oslo Municipality as an organization in various areas.

Lisa Esohel Knudsen from Minotenk believes that the report quantifies experiences they already know. She is happy that the Municipality has mapped this for the first time and believes that better reporting systems must be put in place.
