Russia was formally expelled from the Council of Europe on Wednesday due to the invasion and war in Ukraine.

Earlier this week, the Council of Europe began the process and unanimously decided that Russia should be expelled. And on Wednesday, the Council announced that Russia’s membership had been terminated.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia would have left the organization anyway. In an interview with the Russian broadcaster RBK on Wednesday, he accused NATO and the EU of “abusing their majority in the Council and transforming it into a tool for anti-Russian policy.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba welcomed the decision, tweeting that “there is no place for Russia in European assemblies when the country is waging a barbaric war of aggression against Ukraine and committing numerous war crimes.”
