The Russian government has again warned Sweden and Finland against joining NATO.

The newspaper Aftonbladet writes that spokesperson Maria Zakharova in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commented on the case to the TV channel Russia-24.

She did not specify the consequences of Sweden and Finland joining the Alliance. But the countries have reportedly been warned both publicly and through diplomatic channels.

The Finnish and Swedish authorities are thus fully aware of the consequences, according to Zakharova.

Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev has previously suggested that nuclear weapons could be deployed in the Baltic Sea region if Finland and Sweden join NATO.
