The pandemic led to a sharp decline in the number of passengers for the public transport company Ruter. Now the traffic is back to 85% of pre-pandemic levels.

At its lowest, passenger numbers were around a third of normal levels, Ruter, which operates public transport in the capital area, noted in a press release.

On average, only 62% of usual passengers used public transport during the pandemic.

Ruter’s annual report shows that the market share for public transport fell from 31% before the pandemic in 2019 to 17% in 2021. The number of pedestrians increased by 9% to 30% in 2021, while more people have also used cars and bicycles.

The total number of travelers in 2021 was 38% less than in 2019.

Ruter had a turnover of NOK 10.4 billion last year, with a profit of NOK 68 million. The profit is due to postponed projects, which will be carried out when conditions allow for it. Ticket revenues were NOK 2.2 billion less than budgeted.
