The County Governor in Vestfold and Telemark has ordered Sandefjord Municipality to establish a new quarantine hotel. The Municipality did not want to do so voluntarily.
“This is done in order to have the capacity to offer quarantine hotel stays to an increasing number of travelers arriving in the country.
“In our region, the need for capacity is generated primarily from Sandefjord Airport Torp.
“In addition, passenger traffic via ferries in Langesund, Larvik, and Sandefjord, together with the need to relieve the municipalities around Gardermoen, will entail a significant need for capacity increase throughout the summer,” the Governor of Vestfold og Telemark Per Arne Olsen noted in a press release.
Sandefjord Municipality has now been ordered to establish a quarantine hotel with 2,400 places in collaboration with the Oslofjord Convention Center, as it emerged that the Municipality would not undertake the task voluntarily.
Approaching maximum occupancy
Sandefjord Municipality has since October 2020 offered quarantine hotels for Vestfold and Telemark, and it already has agreements with several hotels.
The hotels now in use are approaching maximum occupancy, and there is a growing need for quarantine hotel capacity.
The County Governor will assist Sandefjord Municipality in handling the task as a host municipality. The state covers the quarantine hotel-related costs that the Municipality will incur.
Oslofjord Convention Center in Stokke has previously also been used as a refugee reception center.
