A SAS plane with 84 evacuees from Afghanistan landed in Copenhagen on Thursday morning. The plane has transported the group from Dubai to the Danish capital.
The plane primarily transported local employees and interpreters who worked for the Danish state, as well as their families, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark stated.
Islamabad in Pakistan serves as a base for Denmark’s evacuation from Afghanistan. The SAS plane landed in Islamabad on Monday, where the 84 evacuees had been gathered, and flew on to Dubai on Wednesday night.
Red Cross provides beds
At Kastrup Airport outside Copenhagen, the Red Cross is ready to receive the evacuees.
“We have a scheme that gives the Afghans who now come to Denmark a good reception and ensures that someone can help them with a warm bed and the essentials,” Andres Ladekarl in the Danish Red Cross noted.
Danes, or people with Danish connections, will also be evacuated from Afghanistan.
“We have a list of Danish citizens or others with legal residence in Denmark. The latest list includes up to 70 people, Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod said on Wednesday.
Great uncertainty may be linked to the ministry’s overview of Danes in Afghanistan, and the real number may be much higher, it is emphasized.
In addition, some people from this list of 70 people may be among the 84 who were on their way to Denmark on Thursday.
According to the tracking service FlightRadar24, the plane with the 84 people landed on Thursday morning.
Danish support to Norway
On Sunday, the Taliban took control of the Afghan capital Kabul, which has led to a large-scale evacuation of, among others, Western embassy staff and Afghans.
Denmark has assisted Norway with evacuation. On Tuesday night, 15 people were transferred by plane from Islamabad to Copenhagen.
A total of 14 Norwegians and a foreign citizen with legal residence in Denmark were on the flight. The 14 arrived in Norway on Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide (H) confirmed that five of them were from the Norwegian Embassy in Kabul and nine from the Armed Forces Sanitation.
