Prime Minister Erna Solberg hopes Colombia uses the opportunity to create peace in the country. Norway has played an important role in diplomacy that has led to the peace agreement with the FARC guerrillas.
– I would first like to congratulate Colombia with consensus in the peace negotiations. This has been a long process that has torn the country apart and led many people have died, says Solberg to news agency NTB in New York.
She and Foreign Minister Børge Brende will meet the Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos on Tuesday.
– I look forward to meet the president. This is a great opportunity for Colombia and the it’s people to create sustainable peace. I hope they take it, says Solberg.
The peace agreement shall be signed by the government and the FARC guerrillas on September 26th but the agreement must also be approved in a referendum.
Colombians voted yes in the referendum, the FARC decided to disarm their forces and establish itself as a political party in half a year.
