Prime Minister Erna Solberg (Høyre/Conservative Party) writes on Twitter that she does not agree with Emmanuel Macron’s assessment of NATO, but believes the alliance has been strengthened in several fields.

There have been many reactions after the French president on Thursday referred to NATO as “brain dead” and questioned the value of Article 5 of the Atlantic Pact. It is the solidarity clause which states that an attack on one member is an attack on everyone.

“I do not agree with Macron’s opinion of NATO. The ability to calm and deter is strengthened,” Solberg writes on Twitter on Friday. The message is illustrated by a picture of Solberg with a helmet, sitting on a military vehicle.

While Macron advocated that Europe must begin to think of itself as a strategic, geopolitical power, Solberg says that Norway supports European initiatives if they support NATO.

“Although we do not agree with everything the US does, our ties to the US are crucial to Norwegian security,” she concludes.
