The Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority reports that 89 corona patients are in intensive care at its hospitals. Over half of them are unvaccinated.

8% of the population is not vaccinated against COVID-19. Nevertheless, this group makes up more than half of the sickest corona patients at the Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority’s hospitals.

56% of COVID-19 inpatients in intensive care have not been vaccinated, the Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority stated on Tuesday.

“It tells us that the vaccine protects well against serious illness,” deputy chief of the Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority, Jan Frich, stated.

Higher vaccination rates needed

In order to reduce the pressure on the hospitals, he believes it is crucial that more people in Norway get vaccinated.

“The relatively small group of unvaccinated people can play a decisive role in how quickly we get out of this serious situation,” Frich stated.

He says that vaccinated people can also be affected by serious illness but that they usually have underlying diseases.

“Almost no one who is healthy and fully vaccinated develops a serious illness,” Frich concluded.
