Frode Berg has spent 483 days imprisoned in Russia as the espionage case against him starts.

‘’It is long enough’’ said the Norwegian’s support group, who want him home.

On Tuesday at 14.00, the trial in Moscow’s court begins. The first day will be about further imprisonment of the Norwegian, but from Wednesday there will be witnesses’’ according to Berg’s Russian defence lawyer. Two to three days are to be devoted to the case.

‘’We are very happy that something is happening.

Now, hopefully, you will get a decision in a short time’’ said the support group leader, Øystein Hansen, to NTB news.

When a possible judgment is ready, he hopes the Norwegian authorities are able to get the retired border inspector home.

“I hope they manage to settle the matter, which is a foreign policy issue for Norway and a human tragedy for him” Hansen said.

‘’Everyone says a judgment must fall first. Then there is the opportunity to find a negotiated solution so that Frode Berg returns to his family. He’s been sitting in jail there long enough.’’
