A total of 42,000 people died in Norway last year. That is 1,400 more compared to the previous year, according to Statistics Norway (SSB).

The number of deaths in Norway has been stable at around 40,700 deaths since 2015.

But last year, 42,002 people died, which is 1,391 more than in 2020, new figures from the SSB show.

The increase was greatest among women, with just over 850 more deaths in 2021 than 2020.

“It is important to remember that in 2020 we had remarkably few deaths seen in the light of the fact that we were in the middle of a pandemic. Therefore, it is not so unexpected that more people died in 2021,” demographer Ane Tømmerås at the SSB noted.

Among those aged 75 or over, 1,462 more people died in 2021 than in 2020.
