Due to high sickness absence rates and a high influx of patients, St. Olav’s hospital is raising its emergency preparedness level.

“The burden on employees is now alarmingly large. We must ensure that we implement measures that ensure a safe working environment and safeguard patient safety,” hospital director Grethe Aasved stated in a press release.

At the beginning of January, the hospital returned to the green level of preparedness after two months in of the yellow level. Now, it’s going back to the yellow level of preparedness again.

“The large increase in infection in society has now primarily affected us through a lot of employees not being at work due to illness or caring for children,” Aasved added.

So far, just under 700 operations have been postponed, Aasved stated.

Sickness absence at several clinics at the hospital is over 25%.
