Statistics Norway: Fewer people live in Sami areas
The population in Sami areas has fallen by about 1% in recent years, per year, according to new Statistics Norway (SSB) figures. The population in the area amounted to 53,710 as of January 1 last year.
After six years of stable population numbers, the trend reversed in 2017. Over the next three years, the population in Sami areas fell by about 500 people, or about 1%, per year.
According to the SSB, the population in the area amounted to 53,710 as of January 1 last year.
Since there is no official registration of Sami people, Statistics Norway compiles statistics for geographical areas north of Saltfjellet, the so-called STN area, which is defined as “Sami” areas.
The outskirts of Norway north of Saltfjellet are defined as a Sami settlement area. All cities and major towns are outside the STN area.
In 1990, there were just over 65,000 people in the STN area, while the number fell to less than 54,000 in 2021.
