Immigrants and their children now make up over a million people in total in the country. There are 820,000 immigrants in Norway, corresponding to 15% of the population.

There were 19,300 more immigrants in Norway at the end of 2021 than a year earlier, according to figures from Statistics Norway (SSB).

The number of immigrants increased more in 2021 than in 2020. The low immigrant numbers in 2020 were related to strict corona measures.

At the turn of the year, there were just over 200,000 Norwegian-born people with immigrant parents in Norway. The group grew by 8,000 people in 2021 compared to the previous year and made up 4% of the population.

Poles in Norway – largest group of immigrants

The number of immigrants from Poland increased the most last year – at the beginning of 2022, there were 105,500 Poles living in Norway, and it was by far the largest group of immigrants.

Immigrants with a background from Lithuania were the second largest group and made up 42,000 people in Norway. Immigrants from Sweden and Syria were in third and fourth place, with 35,900 and 34,400 people, respectively.

Nearly 180,000 immigrants have settled in Oslo, and they make up more than a quarter of the population.
