A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison after he killed his ex-wife and her new boyfriend with a knife in the Storhaug district in Stavanger in June last year.

According to TV 2, Sør-Rogaland District Court believes that Sido Sabri Rashid killed the two to restore honor. Both the accused and the two killed people came to Norway as Syrian asylum seekers.

The man himself notified the police after the killings on the night of June 24 last year and admitted that he stabbed the man. However, he was less clear on whether he killed his ex-wife.

Prior to the trial, the man completely changed his story and claimed that another person had committed the killings. The district court did not trust the man’s new explanation.

During the trial, public prosecutor Folke Åmlid described the killings as brutal and bestial, according to the newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad.

Rashid’s defense counsel, lawyer Odd Rune Torstrup, told TV 2 that he would review the verdict thoroughly with his client during the afternoon.

“Then we will see what we’ll do. A decision has not yet been made on whether the verdict will be appealed,” he said.
