A woman has been awarded NOK 1.7 million in compensation from Stavanger Municipality because the Child Welfare Service did not intervene and take her from her parents in early childhood.

The woman is today in her late 40s. She has been diagnosed with attachment disorders, complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), and schizophrenia. The woman was declared disabled already as a young woman and has been determined to have a degree of disability of 40%, the newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad writes.

Due to the aforementioned conditions, the Sør-Rogaland District Court set the compensation amount at NOK 1.7 million. In addition, the woman was awarded NOK 260,000 in legal costs, the newspaper writes.

The woman’s lawyer Evelyn Egeli says her client is happy to have been heard in court.

“Pleased”

“We are pleased that the district court has seen what role the Child Welfare Service has played (in the case). The Child Welfare Service took over the care of the child, then gave her back to her parents, took over the care for the child again, then gave her back to the parents again, before they finally took over the care for her a third time,” she told the newspaper Aftenbladet.

Stavanger Municipality is now considering whether to appeal the verdict.

“We’re assessing whether the verdict should be accepted or appealed. This has not been decided yet,” Jone Skjelbred, the municipal manager for children, young people, and families in Stavanger Municipality, stated.
