Russia launched a major military exercise with Belarus on Thursday. It marks a dangerous moment for European security, according to NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg.

“We are closely following Russia’s deployment of troops in Belarus, which is the largest since the end of the Cold War,” Stoltenberg told a news conference on Thursday.

Stoltenberg met the press together with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson after a meeting between the two to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

“This is a dangerous moment for European security. The number of Russian soldiers is rising, while the warning time for a possible attack is decreasing,” Stoltenberg said. He has sent a letter to the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, urging him to meet in the NATO-Russia Council and continue the dialogue.

British Prime Minister Johnson also expressed concern about the situation and issued new warnings.

When the Berlin Wall fell, the European people made it clear that they wanted freedom and that their security should be secured together. Now we must resist, and we must avoid returning to a time when a superpower decided the fate of individual countries, Johnson said.
