Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (AP) says that the arrest of NRK journalists Halvor Ekeland and Lokman Ghorbani is unacceptable.

“The arrest of NRK’s journalists in Qatar is unacceptable,” Støre wrote on Twitter.

“A free press is crucial in a functioning democracy. This year’s Nobel Peace Prize award also shows that. I am very happy that Halvor Ekeland and Lokman Ghorbani have now been released,” he added.

Solberg: Norway must issue a clear statement

Former Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) also reacted to the arrest of the two NRK journalists in Qatar. She believes Norway must issue a clear statement.

“It is totally unacceptable that journalists are arrested and thrown into solitary confinement for doing their job… This is also why Qatar should never have been awarded the championship in the first place,” Solberg noted.

“I understand that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is handling the situation and expect Norway to issue a clear statement to Qatar.”

NRK journalists Halvor Ekeland and Lokman Ghorbani landed on Norwegian soil on Wednesday morning after their business trip to Qatar.

They were arrested and put in solitary confinement for over 30 hours.

“It is very good that the two NRK journalists are safe at home again. I have met Lokman at work a number of times – he is a skilled photographer,” Solberg said.
