According to a new study, seven out of ten people who have received intensive treatment for COVID-19 report late effects.

Difficulties while breathing and fatigue are typical side effects that many people experience. But pain in muscles and joints is often overlooked, Danish professor Lars Arendt-Nielsen at Aalborg University noted.

The study included 1,100 corona patients admitted to intensive care units in Spain during the first corona wave this spring.

Arendt-Nielsen has led the study, which shows that 70% of patients experience late effects seven months after admission. They report an average of two or three side effects.

“A little surprised”

“We are a little surprised that so many patients experience late effects so relatively long after they were admitted, and also that there are so relatively many late effects per patient,” Arendt-Nielsen said.

The study also shows that the risk of late effects after admission with coronavirus is greater if you have had pain in muscles and joints during the course of the disease.

“We know that the immune system releases a lot of substances when it comes to fighting viruses and bacteria,” the professor added.
