A Polish driver has been sentenced to five years in prison for smuggling close to 100 kilos of hashish across the border at Svinesund.

The driver arrived in Svinesund in October 2020 with a truck full of baking tins and equipment for a ski lift in Geilo. Among the legal goods, customs officers also found 94.7 kilos of hashish, the newspaper Sarpsborg Arbeiderblad writes.

The driver has since then denied having any knowledge of the hashish. He did not plead guilty.

Before the vehicle went through customs at Svinesund, the Pole took a detour in Sweden of around 600 km. When he was confronted about the trip during his second police interrogation, he explained that the detour was due to a meeting with his mistress.

The Søndre Østfold District Court did not believe the Pole’s story.

“The district court’s verdict has already been appealed because my client did not know that there was hashish on board his truck. He was shocked when the customs officers found the hashish,” the man’s lawyer, Harald Otterstad, stated.
