A new synthetic antibody treatment against COVID-19 can now be used in Sweden. The treatment was urgently approved in the United States in November.

Doctors in Sweden can now use the antibody treatment bamlanivimab, developed by the manufacturer Eli Lilly, to treat coronavirus, even though the drug has not yet been officially approved.

“It is in the approval process, and the results look promising,” group leader Charlotta Bergquist at the Swedish Medicines Agency noted.

Synthetic antibodies

Through the treatment, people get synthetic antibodies via a drip.

“When we get sick, we develop different antibodies, but here a special antibody has been developed,” Bergquist added.

The treatment can be offered to people at risk of serious illness from coronavirus.
