Monday’s military coup in Sudan will have consequences for Swedish aid to the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sweden stated on Wednesday.

The United States is among the countries that have stopped aid payments to Sudan after the military coup.

The Swedish government condemned the coup and the arrest of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other leading politicians in Sudan.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok was released and escorted home by the people behind the coup on Tuesday night but is being kept under strict surveillance.

Several of his ministers and other civilian leaders are still in prison, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
