Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson (S) and Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson are in Evenes in Nordland in connection with the NATO exercise Cold Response.

The two will meet Swedish and Finnish soldiers who are participating in the military exercise. About 1,500 soldiers and officers from the Swedish Armed Forces are participating in Cold Response 2022.

On Friday, Kristersson said Sweden would apply for NATO membership if he managed to form a government this autumn.

The Center Party, the Liberals, and the Christian Democrats are also positive about NATO membership. The Sweden Democrats, for their part, have said that they do not exclude NATO membership if the security situation so requires or if Finland applies.

Andersson said earlier this month that the government would not open a new discussion on NATO membership.

The Cold Response exercise is carried out every two years. This year’s exercise takes place in Northern Norway, Central Norway, and Innlandet. It started on Monday, March 14.

Around 30,000 soldiers from 27 nations are participating.
