The corona pandemic could lead to a shortage of Norwegian ribs for Christmas, according to the grocery industry, which fears a shortage of Norwegian meat well into 2021.

“We fear that we will sell out Norwegian ribs before Christmas,” Bård Gultvedt, director of business policy and government contact in Norgesgruppen, told Nettavisen.

Both meat producers Fatland and Nortura say they had to import more this year due to the pandemic.

“Since the corona pandemic has lasted for some time, a lot of ribs which would normally have been frozen earlier have been used up earlier this year,” director Ole Nikolai Skulberg in Totalmarked in Nortura noted.

Gultvedt in Norgesgruppen says that the stores now fear a shortage of Norwegian pork well into 2021, a fear shared by Coop Norge.

“If the market regulator does not take action quickly, we fear a shortage of Norwegian products in the future,” communications manager Harald Kristiansen noted.
