The Coronavirus outbreak leads to longer prison queues

The outbreak of the Coronavirus has led to a sharp increase in prison queues. More than 1,000 people are now waiting to receive their sentences, the Ministry of Justice said.

– “Before the Coronavirus outbreak, we had almost no prison queues. Now the queues are increasing, and we must work to bring them back down,” Justice Minister Monica Mæland (H) said at the daily Corona press conference on Wednesday.

Her ministry reports to NTB that a total of 1,019 people are now waiting for their sentence.

It is the fear of Coronavirus infection that has led to fewer prisoners. In early April, 260 inmates were released ahead of time, in a so-called advanced release, to reduce the risk of an outbreak of infection in prisons.
