The Danish government has put forward a proposal to limit the sale of alcohol in popular nightlife areas.

According to the proposal, alcohol sales will be banned in shops between 24 and 5 o’clock in typical nightlife areas such as Jomfru Anes Gade in Aalborg, Gothers gade in Copenhagen, and other nightlife zones.

The proposal is one of several that aim to create safer conditions in the nightlife, the newspaper Politiken writes.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says that everyone should be interested in drinking less and moving away from “a drinking culture where people abandon sense.”

“Such a culture is also related to violence, which can occur because people are simply too affected (by the alcohol),” she said.

The proposal entails a partial rollback of the 2005 liberalization, which allowed the sale of alcohol at all hours of the day.
