In a new resolution, the European Parliament (EP) issued a warning on new threats to stability in the Arctic. The EP is particularly concerned about Russian and Chinese activity in the region.

The EU’s strategy for the Arctic must take into account new players such as China and growing tensions in the region, the resolution states.

Both Russia and China have had a growing military presence in the Arctic in recent times. Their buildup surpasses legitimate defense goals, the members of the European Parliament believe.

The Arctic is strategically important and has great geopolitical significance for major powers such as Russia, the United States, and China.
