The European Parliament wants people with vaccine passports to have full freedom to travel

EU citizens with vaccine passports should not be quarantined or face other travel restrictions in the Union, the European Parliament believes.

The demand for full freedom of movement was adopted by 540 to 119 votes after a debate on Wednesday.

Thus, the Parliament’s mandate is clear.

The member states do not want the EU to impose restrictions on their authority to lay down rules for entry and infection control.

The Commission feels the same page, and before the debate, it warned against digging into a conflict that could delay the whole process.

Vaccine passports

The forthcoming vaccine passports – known as green digital certificates in the EU – will confirm whether a person has been vaccinated, is healthy after COVID-19, or has recently tested negative.

To avoid discrimination, EU countries should ensure everyone has access to free testing, the Parliament agreed.

The goal is for the vaccine passports to be in place by the summer.
