The government wants people who are to be deported from Norway to be ordered to be corona tested.

On Monday, the government announced that it proposes that persons who are to be deported in accordance with the Immigration Act, the Extradition Act, or the Arrest Warrant Act can be ordered to be tested to reveal whether they are infected with COVID-19 or forcibly tested in that connection.

The government wants to be able to do so if the testing is necessary to carry out the deportation.

“It would be unfortunate if a foreigner who has a duty to leave Norway can prevent the implementation of the deportation by refusing to be tested against COVID-19,” Minister of Justice and Emergency Management Emilie Enger Mehl (SP) noted.

She says it would be detrimental to confidence in immigration policy if the duty to leave could be sidestepped in this way.

“It is also very costly and resource-intensive when the foreigner stays for a long time at the immigration detention center at Trandum.”

The government is now sending out the bill for consultation with a three-week consultation deadline.
