The Norwegian government wants to make everyday life easier for more foreign nationals by giving them the right to a Norwegian ID card.

“Many foreign citizens residing in Norway need an ID certificate that documents their Norwegian birth or d-number, i.e., a temporary ID number, in the National Register.

“With a national ID card, they will easily and safely be able to identify themselves on a daily basis,” State Secretary Erik Idsøe in the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness stated.

The scheme shall apply to foreign nationals who have a residence permit or right of residence in Norway for more than three months.

The Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness has sent proposals for the new rules in the passport and ID card regulations for consultation in the Norwegian parliament (Storting). The consultation deadline is June 3.
