County Council leader Siv Henriette Jacobsen (AP) in Viken wants a dissolution of the large county. But the discussion in the Labor Party may end with the party saying no.

Just before Christmas, on December 17, Jacobsen presented the County Council’s recommendation to dissolve Viken. But Jacobsen will have to wait until February 5 – when the party’s county Supervisory Board will meet – to see whether a majority in the party will support the move, the newspaper Budstikka writes.

If the Labor Party were to go against Jacobsen’s recommendation, Viken would most likely remain as it is today, according to Budstikka.

The Center Party (SP), the Socialist Left Party (SV), and the Red Party (Rødt) have been clear that they want the dissolution of Viken. The Progress Party is also on board. In total, the four parties have 26 representatives.

Key role

But the Conservatives (H), the Christian Democrats (KRF), and the Liberals (V) want to keep Viken in place. They are standing together on the issue with 27 representatives. A total of 44 votes are needed to get a majority in the County Council. Thus, the Labor Party’s 23 representatives will be key when it comes to deciding on Viken’s future.

Martin Kolberg heads the co-operation committee, which will facilitate the vote in the Supervisory Board on February 5. He is also the leader of the Labor Party in Buskerud.

“The Labor Party is a governing party and will not make the same mistake as when Viken was established when no one thought about the consequences,” he told Budstikka.
