In recent years, the number of patients treated for eating disorders has increased sharply, especially in 2020, figures from the Norwegian Patient Register show.

During five years after 2015, the number of people diagnosed with anorexia in Norway increased by 25%, the newspaper Bergens Tidende writes.

Among those who have so-called “unspecified eating disorders,” i.e., who have some but not all the symptoms of anorexia or bulimia, there was an increase of as much as 40% in the aforementioned period.

In 2020, a total of 2,792 people received treatment for anorexia, compared with 2,525 the year before. For bulimia, there was a slight decrease from 1,349 to 1,299, while there was an increase for unspecified eating disorders – from 1,686 to 1,929.

The figures from 2021 are not yet available.
