Deportations have been put on hold because of the coronavirus epidemic. Now the police are warning that they may have to release illegal immigrants who pose a social risk.

The Norwegian Correctional Service is now releasing inmates who have a short time left of their sentence to minimize the risk of infection in Norwegian prisons. Thus, capacity problems have arisen on the immigration unit at Trandum, writes Aftenposten.

Many of the detainees are foreign nationals who do not have legal residence in Norway, who will be detained at Trandum pending release.

“The extraordinary situation in Norway now, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, has also had major consequences for the Police Immigration Service on Trandum,” wrote the Police Immigration Service in a document sent to the Norwegian Correctional Service on March 18.
