The United States believes the consequences could be severe if IS fighters get to Norway on their own. Now they are asking the government to bring home the warriors from Syria.

– “We need more than ever that governments repatriate their citizens. The consequences are potentially serious if foreign warriors return to their home countries on their own and are unsupervised. This is a danger the President has highlighted several times,” the US Embassy in Norway told NRK.

According to NRK, five Norwegian women and six children are interned in the camps at al-Hol and al-Roj northeast of Syria. The women are suspected or charged with participating in the terrorist group IS. The government has previously said that they will not bring the women home.

Earlier this fall, President Donald Trump also commented on what European countries should do with their foreign warriors.

“If you don’t take them, I’m going to drop them at the border, and you can have fun catching them again,” Trump said at a press conference.

Secretary of State Audun Halvorsen (H) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs tells NRK that Norway wants foreign warriors to be punished where the crime has taken place.

– “However, among the various international solutions presented so far, alternatives do not appear to exist without significant disadvantages. Norway is prepared to take its responsibility and prosecute foreign warriors who come to Norway,” says Halvorsen.
